Cannabis Sativa plants are quite different from their Indica counterparts in both the way they grow and the way they smoke. Known for its cerebral, uplifting high, Sativa strains are very popular among recreational smokers as well as with the medical marijuana community, where it is widely used to relieve anxiety, depression and muscle tension among other things. Sativa plants usually grow quite tall and take longer to flower, but produce higher yields.

Alaskan Ice

Greenhouse Seed Company
Sativa 70% / Indica 30%
Origins: White Widow x Haze
This variety has a very spicy aroma, leading with black pepper and cedar flavors and followed by an aftertaste of forest moss. On first puff, it can be slightly acrid, but soon mellows into a fresh herbal sandalwood flavor that is pleasant to the palate. This is a variety to share at parties and on joyous occasions. It is not well suited for a daytime or solitary smoke or for intense focus and in-the-zone productivity. As medicine, Alaskan Ice has been promising for treating pain, glaucoma, depression and stimulating appetite.

DJ Short Seeds
Sativa 60% / Indica 40%
Origins: Purple Thai x Afghan Indica
Flo has an energetic, motivating buzz with unusual clarity. This is true wake and bake pot, great to start the day off right without losing sight of your intentions. The flavor has a floral quality similar to Nepalese Temple Hash, with a touch of the blueberry tones that remind you they are relatives. The smell echoes the taste, remaining subtle and light. Flo was rated #1 at the 1996 Cannabis Cup by Cannabis Culture magazine.

Maui Wowie

Maui Wowie

Nirvana Seeds
Mostly Sativa
Origins: Hawaiian Islands
Maui Wowie has a citrusy aroma and a smooth, fruity, tropical flavor. Its euphoric, uplifting high is light and energetic, making this strain perfect for outdoor activities like hiking or hanging out on the beach.
Like most Sativa strains, Maui Wowie is valued by the medical marijuana community for its qualities beneficial to people suffering from stress, depression and anxiety.

Lamb’s Bread

Lamb’s Bread (or Jamaican Lamb’s Bread) has mysterious lineage, but is believed to have long-lasting, predominant Sativa genetics from the island of Jamaica.
The effects from Lamb’s Bread tend to be instant, plentiful, euphoric and are typically considered to be very exciting. It is exactly how I would expect any pure Sativa strain to smoke. Absolutely no body fatigue or heavy feeling associated with this phenotype of Lamb’s Bread. Although phenotypes can differ, almost all versions of Lamb’s Bread that I have come across generate an uplifting, clear-headed feeling of contentment. This makes Lamb’s Bread great for medicating during those early morning wake and bake sessions. Lamb’s Bread is most popular among patients suffering from depression, anxiety, stress, chronic headaches/migraines and other head-related illnesses. This strain will bring an uncontrollable smile to your face that won’t go away. The Lamb’s Bread strain is typically considered to be a go-to Sativa strain for many patients looking to medicate all-day — especially when you are going to be working creatively.

Cannabis Indica plants get their genetics from the original landrace strains of India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they were used primarily for the production of hashish. Unlike Sativas, smoking Indica buds typically results in a heavier, sedating stone, which is why they are often used for pain relief by medical marijuana patients. When growing, indica plants tend to be somewhat compact and have tight nugs and wide leaves

Hindu Kush

Original Seeds
Origins: Landrace Hindu Kush
Potency: THC 17%
This strain is brought to you by Original Seeds, a collective breeding and operating in Russia. Hindu Kush plants have a milder, more enjoyable taste than Afghani Indicas and are known to smell like sandalwood and charas. The high has a mesmerizing, strong effect, though it is a calm and meditative high as opposed to one that is a complete freeze of the brain.

OG Kush

Origins: Los Angeles Kush x SFV strain
OG Kush, has the highest THC content of all kushes and is sometimes so strong, it “makes your teeth hurt” after you smoke a bowl.

Bubba Kush

Origins: (NL) Bubba x Kush
When smoked, Bubba Kush goes straight to the head with a mind-numbing effect that slowly spreads down to the rest of the body. This smooth, tasty smoke will make you want to take another hit, but overindulgence can lead to couch lock and major munchies.

BF Blue Cheese

Origins: Skunk #1 Cheese variant x Blueberry
Barney’s Farm Blue Cheese is a variety with one-of-a-kind taste – it is rich, round and smooth with a connoisseur’s spectrum from the sweet and floral to the deep, earthen chocolate baseline. The intense and pungent earthy musk aromas of the Cheese are retained, but are now tempered with sweet incense-like Blueberry notes.
Barney’s Farm Blue Cheese’s high is very heady. It creeps up then comes on strong, with a full body stone. Many people will enjoy the trajectory of this mentally peaceful and physically relieving buzz. It has a pleasant entry and exit, although as it winds down, some people may find it a bit of a knockout, requiring a short nap to reset before moving on to any other activity.

Dutchmen’s Royal Orange

Flying Dutchmen
Origins: Skunk #1 x California Orange
This regal variety has a delectably sweet smell combined with a hashish taste exposing the Afghani mother’s influence. The Royal Orange buzz is a strongly physical sensation, good for kicking back in the sun or on the couch for an epic movie. Even with the strong bodily sensation, this variety retains the clear high of the Skunk parent.

Indica Dominant

Indica Dominant
Origins: OG x Cherry Pie (Durban Poison x Granddaddy Purple)
This strain offers a Sativa-like head-buzz and good flavor from the Durban Poison, as well as a heavy body-melt from the OG Kush. Tons of different shades of light green mixed with a bit of purple and orange hairs make this bud a spectacle for all to see. This strain’s distinct look makes it one that I can pick out of a lineup without fail.
The fresh smell is pretty unique as well, but the Girl Scout Cookies strain’s smoke-ability and potency are its standout attributes. The smooth smoke and intricate taste keeps me excited for each and every session.
This Indica-dominant hybrid is known to be quite spacey. It can cause a cerebral mind-warp, making it difficult for some to focus for longer than a few minutes. I found myself on the front porch after a short vaporizing session, just watching cars go by for hours while thinking about life and I noted the following effects: giggly, uplifted, euphoric, all combined with an appropriately mellow body high.
Accordingly, I prefer to medicate with the Girl Scout Cookies strain on those days when there is not too much on my plate. It allows to me to relax and fully enjoy the day.
The Girl Scout Cookies strain has become popular among patients suffering from anxiety, chronic stress, depression, migraines and more. It has the capability of becoming a knockout strain in large concentrations as well. As such, it may be a useful option for those suffering from insomnia. --

Granddaddy Purple

Origins: Northern California
There is a potent, undeniable grape tinge to this plant’s aroma and a sweet grape taste that lingers subtly on the tongue. Granddaddy Purple’s effects are enduring, with a smooth, even feeling throughout. For an Indica, the buzz is surprisingly alert and energetic rather than sedating. This is a good smoke for walking in the high meadows and swimming in the lake afterwards. Medicinally, this variety has given relief to cancer chemotherapy patients.

Hash Plant

Sensi Seeds
Origins: Original HP x NL #1
Hash Plant stays compact during her extra-short flowering time. Her tight, resin-drenched flower clusters develop a brittle surface when dried and give off a deep, rich Afghani aroma that’s undercut with a hint of hashish. When consumed, her dominant flavor is the spicy-sharp bite of smoldering resin glands. The instant vaporization of those layers of sparkling trichomes accelerates Hash Plant’s rapid, blissful and breathtakingly powerful body-stone. This 90% indica is the product of careful genetic selection, a process that involved matching the mysterious Hash Plant original from the U.S. with Northern Lights. --

Chocolate Kush

Chocolate Kush (a phenotype of Chocolope) is a good example of how awesome nature can be. However, it is also one of those medical marijuana strains that has you wondering if you just bought the wrong medicine when you look into the bag as the dull green and shades of chocolate brown make it look like nothing special whatsoever. The smell is what really drew us in and is something I still remember to this day. Not that it was the best smell in the world but it was extremely intriguing and reminded me of an earthy ice cream. Each hit is extremely smooth and milky, followed by an almost instant relaxing trance that is full-bodied and intense. The medicine seems to work itself from the inside out, making your inner core feel at peace. You’ve gotta love that kush — it’s premium, natural medicine in our book.
Being an uplifting Indica, the effects of Chocolate Kush are extremely enjoyable and patients can expect a bunch of smiles and laughs coming their way. Just a few hits of this strain and you’ll be feeling more and more relaxed. Quite a creeper, the Kush will help relieve pain in patients dealing with cancer and chemo or other painful conditions. A highly recommended medication that is somewhat rare to find. --

Super Skunk

Grade: A
Type: Indica
Looks: Light green with brown hairs and lots of trichomes
Smell: Not skunky at all, kind of a sweet citrus
Taste: Sweet
Effects: Mellow, relaxing stone I like to harvest later in the day for the couch lock effect.
Potency: B, not a total knock-out
Reviewed by: Jah’s Garden
Good Strain For: medical IBS, insomnia, headaches, cramps, appetite stimulation

Cataract Kush

DNA Genetics
Origins: OG Kush x LA Confidential
Cataract Kush is a connoisseur-grade Indica that novices can grow with great results. Even though they can grow this plant easily, they may want to read the warning label first. The Cataract is so named because it brings on a stone that penetrates deep into the body. This is a heavy stone that creeps up about ten minutes after smoking and keeps building in intensity long after the smoking has ended. Combine that with the creeper effect, and it can cause serious couch lock for the uninitiated.
Lightweight smokers may have an unpleasant experience if unprepared, but those who are after the big Indica stone will be pleased with the hashy, spicy-sweet flavor that brings the rich pungency of Eastern spices. Medical users will enjoy this strain’s usefulness for pain relief, encouragement of appetite and assistance with sleep.

Hybrid marijuana strains are much more common these days than pure Indicas or pure Sativas. As more cannabis breeders cross different strains in an effort to combine and improve favorable genetics, many wonderful hybrids have been introduced to the world. These strains combine their parents’ genetics and often have a wonderful balance of both Indica and Sativa characteristics.

Bruce Banner #3

Sativa Dominant Hybrid
Originally bred by “OG Ironlung,” the mystery OG Kush (now thought by those involved in its creation to be Ghost’s OG Kush) was pollinated by a Reservoir Seeds Strawberry Diesel and there were three main phenotypes that stuck around. Number three was thought to be the pick of the litter.
Banner’s effect seems to depend largely upon harvest time, with an early harvest making for a very cerebral and borderline rushy experience and a later harvest giving a more relaxing effect.
Generally, it starts strongly Sativa, with lots of eye and face pressure, a floaty, buzzing body, and an increase in heart rate. The energy it gives is easily channeled into productivity making the Banner a suitable daytime strain, though its potency is often too much for professional situations, especially for those who suffer from anxiety. The second half takes on a more relaxed feel, with more of the clear-headed relaxation that OG Kush is known for. --

Buddha’s Sister

Soma Seeds
Indica 80% / Sativa 20%
Origins: Reclining Buddha x Afghani Hawaiian
Previously called Soma Skunk V+, this variety was renamed Buddha’s Sister to suit its tendencies and advance its appeal to Amsterdam coffee shops. What’s in a name? Directly after this deliciously good weed acquired a more intriguing name, the strain regularly sold out at the coffee shops and remains one of the best selling weeds available at De Dampkring. As with all of Soma’s varieties, Buddha’s Sister is medicinal quality cannabis, therapeutic for many conditions.

Blue Chernobyl

Grade: A++
Type: 90% Sativa / 10%indica
Breeder: TGA Subcooled Genetics
Genetics: Trainwreck x Trinity X x Jack The Ripper x Blueberry
Looks: Medium-sized tight buds. A beautiful light green covered in trichomes, the buds appear white with orange hairs popping out periodically.
Taste: Has a smooth deep flavor that resembles the smell. I got a very nice blueberry flavor on the inhale and an earthy, smooth, dank taste on the exhale. This taste lingers very nicely on the palate
Effects: 2-3 hours
Potency: 10/10
Reviewed by: KXGEOFFXP
Good Strain For: This strain is a personal favorite and I always keep it on me. I found it worked great with stomach issues and for pain relief. --

Blue Diesel Cannabis

Strain: Blueberry & NYC Diesel
Just as you would expect from a name like Blue Diesel, the genetics are directly related to the mixing of Blueberry (Indica-dominant Hybrid) and NYC Diesel (Sativa-dominant Hybrid). Each hit of Blue Diesel comes with smooth, expansive smoke that seems to be extremely fast-acting. One of my favorite strains to medicate with during the day as it provides full-bodied medicine that won’t leave me exhausted.
Consider the Blue Diesel strain if you suffer from chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, or muscle spasms.
If you have encountered the Blueberry strain before, you probably are already familiar with its Indica dominance. Blueberry is typically considered as roughly 80% Indica and 20% Sativa. Its noticeable body effect can definitely be found in Blue Diesel as well. --

Blue Dream

Santa Cruz Medical
80% Sativa / 20% Indica
Origins: D.J. Short’s Blueberry x Santa Cruz Haze
Potency – THC 17%
Blue Dream is a dense, popcorn-like bud with purple and blue hues and light orange hairs. It has a very spicy aroma and taste, some would say slightly tropical, making it an extremely palatable choice.
When you smoke Blue Dream, you will first feel its Sativa-like effects. You will become very focused and calm. After a few more hits, you will feel the Indica effects and within an hour, you’ll be relaxed.

Big Buddha Seeds
Sativa 60 / Indica 40
Origins: UK Cheese x NYC Diesel
Chiesel is smelly and pungent and brings the old school sublimeness that the Cheese captures together in harmony with the grapefruit fuel kush of the Diesel. The flavors of this weed can serve as a party icebreaker, getting people talking or circling for a taste of the hashy fuel pungency with a grapefruit sour edge. With Chiesel, the party doesn’t end there – this is a very up, energetic strain that has an electric, enlivening feel to it. It can lead to giggling and improvisational creativity and it has enough body balance to bring out a sensual mood when the party is just for two.

Grape Ape

Grape Ape is an Indica-dominant hybrid of the Mendocino Purps strain, Skunk #1 and an Afghani landrace.
The combination of the Mendo Purps and Afghani strains is known to bring about an intense body melt. That makes it ideal for patients suffering from insomnia or chronic pain.
However, Skunk #1 is a Sativa-dominant strain that tends to pass on an uplifting, cerebral effect. This is somewhat true in the case of Grape Ape, but it tends to be outweighed by the heavier effects caused by the Mendocino Purps and Afghani strains.
The Grape Ape strain’s terpene profile seems very similar to that of Granddaddy Purple. Both strains have an intense berry aroma, making it hard to tell them apart based on smell alone. I likened the smell from this batch to a big bowl of Berry Kix cereal.
Smoking it seemed to eliminate any pain throughout my body and it noticeably reduced the amount of tension I could feel in my neck and shoulders. It helped counter any anxiety as well.
With that said, large concentrations of the Grape Ape strain have a tendency to make patients groggy after a couple of hours. Accordingly, it is best to medicate with this strain at night. Consider the Grape Ape strain if you suffer from insomnia, chronic pain, chronic stress or muscle spasms. --

Purple Haze

Positronics Seeds
Sativa 85% / Indica 15%
Origins: Purple Thai x Haze
Purple Haze is an extremely smooth and tasty smoke combining the Sativa qualities of the Haze with the color, smell, and taste added by the Purple genetics. The high is clear-headed, uplifting and euphoric.
While medical marijuana users may find this strain useful for treating muscle tension and anxiety, Purple Haze is also a great choice for recreational use as it’s not “heavy” and is a very social smoke.

Nirvana Seeds
Sativa 50% / Indica 50%
Origins: Skunk & White family strain
Ice practically fumes with the nearly fuel-like scent of raw THC. Flavored like Nepali black hash, toking Ice is likely to induce coughing. You can plan on putting your brain on ice because this variety’s heavy stone may leave you in a lazy daze for hours.
Winner, High Times Cannabis Cup 1998.

Island Sweet Skunk

Federation Seed Co.
Origins: Skunk #1
I honestly had no idea what to expect when I heard my favorite dispensary had Sweet Island Skunk on their shelves. I had previously picked up some Sweet Island Skunk in the Bay area, but with lackluster results. However, the good news is this time around was much, much different. Finally, a pristine example of how a batch of Sweet Island Skunk should be.
Sweet Island Skunk (or Island Sweet Skunk) genetics can be linked to Skunk #1 x unknown Sativa, making this a Sativa-dominant Hybrid. At first glance, Sweet Island Skunk looked awfully similar to an Indica with its small, super condensed buds. However, the effects start off much more Sativa-like only to be followed by a mellow body buzz.
It’s considered to be a very calming medication for both the body and mind. This makes Sweet Island Skunk popular among patients suffering from ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, stress, stomach issues, arthritis and/or chronic migraines.
Typically thought of as a daytime strain, patients like to use Sweet Island Skunk all day to stay medicated both mentally and physically. Its ability to provide patients with a 70% head-high (Sativa) and 30% body-high (Indica) is particularly effective for those looking for a full-bodied medication that won’t knock you out.
Visually, each bud in this Sweet Island Skunk batch had a good amount of hairs covering them as well as trichomes — always a good sign for quality medication. I was expecting a tropical, stinky scent, but instead was greeted with nice, sweet smelling buds that had undertones of earth and skunk.
The taste was very similar, it is an extremely smooth smoke with skunk and sugary sweet undertones. A few hits of the bowl will leave you feeling somewhat groggy from the cloudy head effect. --

Master Kush

Origins: Hindu Kush x Skunk
Buds are dense, thick and heavy. The strain has a hint of earthiness and sweet citrus, but is virtually without taste. Easy on lungs and palate, smooth to smoke and it gives an overall body buzz that is relaxing, but awake. --

Space Queen

Genetics: Romulan mixed with Cinderella 99.
This type of medical marijuana has a very fruity aroma, with a hint of sweet pineapple. There is some definite spiciness and woodsiness to the buds, presumably from the Romulan.
After the medicating session, there is a clear head-rush similar to the effect you would get from smoking any type of Haze. It is a very Sativa-like hybrid that causes more of a mental high than a body high. This is an uplifting medication that helps patients relieve stress and brings a smile to those who medicate with it. --

Sour Diesel

Reservoir Seeds
Sativa 90% / Indica 10%
Origins: Mexican Sativa x Chemo
This strain features sour Diesel taste combined with its effects and may be considered an “extreme sport” version of cannabis. The stone pulls smokers into the sky fast with a viscerally uplifting pleasure and lots of consciousness expansion in the direction of spirituality. This good-vibe variety may help alleviate chronic depression, as well as the ordinary blahs by encouraging a change in perspective. --

Banana Kush

Genetics: XXX-OG Kush x Banana
Grade: A+
Type: Indica Dominant Hybrid (60% Indica / 40% Sativa)
Looks: Bright lime glowing, crystal coated, tasty tropical loveliness and completely covered with rust red and golden yellow pistils. These buds were grown, handled and cured to perfection. This was a “Vegan” herb, grown using a completely animal product- free process from start to finish.
Smell: Sweet tropical fruits. This is my first impression upon opening the jar followed by just a little tart spiciness that nicely completes this exotic package. I think overall this medicine smells very sweet and fresh – a bit like a fresh cut honeydew melon mixed with green bananas. The smell is very definite, but is not something that invades the whole room, with no muskiness or skunkiness at all.
Taste: This is where the bananas really shine through. It comes on just as smooth and sweet as can be, just delicious. Whether by power of suggestion or not, I totally taste fresh bananas mixed with honeydew melon and this stays in the mouth for a while after an inhale. The smoking experience (I used a small hand blown glass piece) is smooth and pleasant with no expansion to speak of and no coughing at all. 10/10
Effects: Numbing and muscle relaxing starts at the top of the head and quickly moves down the body, accompanied by mass euphoria. This is an amazing hybrid as it stopped all pain very quickly, but as it passed over my eyes everything seemed to brighten up a notch or two and colors became very vibrant and inviting. My whole body and mind were completely relaxed, but my energy and consciousness completely expanded for several hours. I’m not sure what Indica genetics were used in this strain but you can sure feel the OG end of it as this medicine is very strong even though it is very euphoric and pleasant and a delight to smoke.

Grade: A
Type: 50 % Indica / 50% Sativa
Looks: Yellowish green, reddish brown hairs, very crystally
Smell: Pine-y, lemony
Taste: Lemony
Effects: Instant high, good for pain and over all buzz.
Potency: Very strong
Good Strain For: Pain, social lubricant, laughter, good times, treating depression.

Green Crack

Super Sativa Seed Club
90% Sativa / 10% Indica
Origins: Skunk #1 x Sweet Leaf Indica
Potency: 18% THC
Don’t let the name put you off, this strain is high quality cannabis. It was originally bred in Athens, Georgia in the 1970s with the birth name of Cush. It was later renamed “Green Crack” by none other than Snoop Dogg because of its extreme potency and the craving to keep smoking it. Green Crack is extremely popular in Southern California with both medical marijuana patients, for its strong Sativa effects, and recreational users who love its sweet taste and happy high.

Golden Goat

This strain was created by accident in Topeka, Kansas, when a male Hawaiian-Romulan pollinated Mr. Dank's Island Sweet Skunk mother. The strain is often light green and pink in color, which is indicative of its Hawaiian Sativa side. The scent is described as being a combination of sweet, sour and spicy with a tropical fruit flavor.
Effects are strong and felt from head to toe, lasting about 1-2 hours. Flowering time is 9-11 weeks, with a golden appearance closer to harvest. This Sativa-dominant hybrid has a THC level of up to 23% and a CBD of 1.07%. --

White Urkle

White Urkle is a hybrid of Purple Urkle and The White bred by OG Raskal Genetics. Most phenotypes will express themselves with deep violet hues that show the influence of its Purple Urkle mother. This strain is known for having a short stature and a fruity bouquet of flavors that mix with an earthy, pine aroma that gives rise to relaxing yet balanced effects. --
